Fiat Panda Electric Power Steering Column Issues
The Electric Power Steering Column is known to be a very common failing part on the Fiat Panda. The electric steering column replaces the earlier conventional hydraulic power steering system found fitted to earlier models. By eliminating the need to have a pump, its design allowed an increase in fuel economy by reducing the bulk and size of the whole unit. However, this expensive part is a very common failure and they all at some point or another end up failing, requiring replacement or repair.
Fiat Panda Electric Steering Rack – Common Faults
Some of the most common issues that will indicate the failure of the Electric Steering Column could include some of the symptoms below:
1. Heavy steering (can be in one direction but will mostly be in both directions)
2. Intermittent loss of steering.
3. Total loss of power steering.
4. Steering starts to pull to one side (Self steer).
5. Steering vibrates when turning.
6. Power steering light illuminated on the dash
If you find the above faults with your Fiat Panda, it will more than likely mean that your electric steering column is damaged or faulty. When connecting diagnostic equipment through the OBD port, the following most common faults may appear from the Power Steering Module:
- C1001 – Rear left external sensor
- C1002 – Steering Column Torque Position
If the power steering column becomes completely faulty, going to a main dealer for a replacement could cost you from £800 + VAT (plus labour + coding), and will more than likely only come with a 12 month warranty. You could also opt to buy a used second hand unit, but most of the time, due to the lack of information regarding the miles done on the previous vehicle or how well it was maintained, this could also lead to a complete failure at some point.
