The Fiat Punto’s power steering system is not conventionally hydraulic, it utilises an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system which includes an Electric Steering Column. The column comes complete with an ECU coded to the vehicle and a steering motor.

Fiat Punto Steering problems are very common, however, as the ECU’s are coded to the vehicle, it makes it a lot harder for people to just swap and change them for a second hand unit which in most cases, is what customers would prefer rather than paying for a brand new one.

The most common fault with the system on the Fiat Punto is when the power steering warning light appears on the dash causing the steering to go heavy. There are a number of reasons why this happens but mainly due to the load on the electrical system. The primary reason for it’s failure is the “City Mode” feature. The City Mode function was designed purely for parking purposes, however people that use this function more frequently risk overloading their electrical system and burning out the Fiat Punto steering column, which could cost in excess of £600 new from Fiat’s main dealer.
