Renault Megane Electric Power Steering Column Problems
A very common failing part on the MK2 Renault Megane from 2002 – 2009 is the Electric Power Steering Column. The electric steering column replaces the earlier conventional hydraulic power steering system found fitted to earlier models and when working correctly is a great concept but unfortunately this expensive part is a very common failure and they all at some point or another end up failing, requiring replacement or repair.
Renault Megane Electric Steering Column – Common Faults
When the electric steering column is failing it will usually begin with an intermittent fault whereby the steering warning light will illuminate on the dash and then go out itself. The steering may also go heavy intermittently, sometimes just in one direction but more commonly it will go heavy in both directions. If the problem is ignored, the electric power steering column will fail completely in which case the steering warning light will permanently be illuminated on the dash and the steering wheel go completely heavy with no power assistance. Connecting diagnostic equipment through the OBD port will bring up some fault codes from the Power Steering Module and below are the two most common faults we’ve seen these units come in with:
- C1606 – Motor driver malfunction
- C1608 – Control unit malfunction
When your Electric Steering Column becomes faulty, the dealer will quote you for a very expensive replacement in excess of £800 +Vat (plus labour + coding), which will come with a limited 12 month warranty. A second hand used part will be cheaper, will come with a limited 30-90 day warranty but there is no real guarantee it will last because it is such a common fault that they will all fail at some point and you don’t know how much mileage the used part has already covered or how well the vehicle was maintained.
