Fiat 500 Electric Power Steering Column Problems
The Electric Power Steering column on the Fiat 500 has been known to commonly fail. Earlier models were fitted with the conventional hydraulic power steering systems and when working correctly, they were a great concept, however, it was expensive to replace and repair as they always ended up failing. These were then replaced with the electric steering column which not only provides fuel efficiency but are also much more simpler to manufacture and maintain.
Fiat 500 Electric Steering Column – Common Faults
Despite the improved efficiency and design of the electric steering column, it is still known to fail in many vehicles, the Fiat 500 being one of them. When an electric steering column fails, initially it will begin as an intermittent fault where the steering warning light will appear on the dash but then disappear. The steering may then also get heavier intermittently, sometimes in one direction but more commonly it will go heavy in both directions. If you find the steering light permanently highlighted on the dash, this indicates that the electric power steering column has failed completely and you will notice the steering will become heavy with no power steering assistance. When connecting diagnostic equipment through the OBD port, fault codes will identify the issues with Power Steering module and some of the most common faults that have been highlighted are:
- C1001 – Rear left external sensor
- C1002 – Steering Column Torque Position
When the Electric Steering Column fails, a replacement will cost in the excess of £800 + VAT (plus Labour + Coding) which will come with a limited 12-month warranty. You could go with the alternative option of purchasing a second hand used part, which will be cheaper but will only come with a 30-90 day warranty. However, there is no real guarantee that it will last, as you will have no record of the previous vehicle it was attached to or how much mileage that vehicle had already covered before being replaced. Also, as it is such a common fault, it may still eventually fail.
