BMW 1 Series Electric Power Steering (EPS) Problem – Pumps and Racks

BMW 1 Series Power Steering RepairsThe BMW 1  Series uses a modern Electric Power Steering (EPS) system which consists of a Power Steering Rack with an electric motor, Power Steering Pump and high pressure & low pressure hydraulic pipes which connect them together. The system is linked with a Steering column (shaft) which is what the steering wheel is fixed to at the user-end.

Below we’ve listed some common problems with the power steering components on the BMW 1 Series and this should hopefully help you better diagnose any faults you’re experiencing and replace the right parts.

Common BMW 1 Series Power Steering Pump Failures

  • Leaking / Loss of Oil
  • Whining
  • Heavy Steering (Either Way)
  • Loss of Power (When Idling)
  • Loss of Power (When Idling & Whilst Revving)

Common BMW 1 Series Electric Power Steering Rack Failures

  • Leaking / Loss of Oil
  • Steering Light On Dash
  • Steering Fault Codes Won’t Clear
  • Loss of Power (When Idling & Whilst Revving)
  • Heavy Steering (Either way)
  • Heavy Steering (One-Way)
  • Knocking From Steering
  • Excessive Play in Steering Wheel
  • Excessive Play in Track-Rod Arms

As you can see from the above, some of the problems can occur in both a Power Steering Rack and a Power Steering Pump fault – for example having Loss of Power (When Idling & Whilst Revving) but if you’re unsure as to what may be causing this problem, then give us a call and we would be happy to assist you in diagnosing the problem further.

Alternatively you may drive down to us and have one of our highly specialised engineers take a look at your vehicle and give our expert opinion of the problem.

  • I’ve got a problem with my electric steering rack and I’m looking to repair or replace. Please quote me prices to rebuild my rack or replace it. The steering has gone heavy and the warning light is on.

    • Hi Simon

      Thank you for your enquiry,

We can definitely help either rebuild your existing Electric Power Steering Rack (EPS) or offer a replacement unit on an exchange basis. Judging by the symptoms you’ve described it sounds like the Electric Steering Motor may have burnt out or there is possible damage to the Power Steering Control Unit (ECU). Either way, we can fully test + repair the units and the electrical repairs all come with our Lifetime warranty. I have sent you a quick email with full pricing and information for both options. If you have any further queries, please do come back to me.

      Kind Regards

      Jason

  • Hi just purchased a 2006 BMW 1 series 116i, the steering is very heavy. I have checked the the transmission fluid which is a little low, now is topped up it’s still very heavy

    • Hello Steven

      Thank you for your enquiry,

I would recommend checking your tracking, rack mountings, ball joints and suspension – if all checks out okay then we would suspect the fault is within the rack or electronic steering control unit. I have sent you a quick email with full pricing and repair information.

      Kind Regards

  • Hi, I have got a BMW series 1 118d 2007 and it has a red warning on the dash , its a red steering wheel and padlock and comes up with a code CC-ID 186. I have been told the I would probably need to replace the steering column. Would you be able to give me a quote for this jon inc labour and vat?

    • Hello Rudy

      Thanks for the enquiry,

We can definitely help but I believe that fault code would relate to a fault within the Electric steering rack and not the column. I have sent over an email with full pricing and information for you.

      Kind Regards

  • Hi, I have a bmw 1 series 120d 2005 and have been told the control board attached to the motor is only delivering 2.9v instead of the 12v needed. Is it possible to get this part without buying the whole column?? And how much? Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks

    • Hello Donna

      Thanks for the enquiry,

I believe the electronic module is mounted to the steering rack and I’m afraid this part cannot be purchased separately but we are able to remanufacture the unit for you to get it working again. The remanufactured unit will be returned with a Lifetime warranty and will not require coding. We’ve sent you an email with full pricing & information.

  • Hi, I had a service on my 2008 BMW 125i yesterday. Immediately getting it out from the garage I felt my steering got really light. And when I went on to the motor way I felt there is a play on my steering. Checked the tyre presure..they are fine. So I took the car back to the garage. They said they couldn’t find any faults. Your thought would be much appreciated. Thanks

    • Hi Krish

      Sorry for the late reply,

It’s a common problem for the steering to get ultra light and is a faulty we are able to test and repair. We’ve sent you an email with full information and pricing to repair this fault.

  • Hello, i have an F20 2013 118i, the power steering is making a weird noise like a grinding metal and its not bearable. Also there is a steering signal on the dashboard. Could the steering rack damage quickly at just 31,000km? or what could be wrong?

    • Hi Dave

      Thanks for the enquiry,

It can definitely be the steering rack unit – we’ve seen these fail with as little as 12,000 miles on the clock. Are you able to pop in for an inspection?
Please call or send an email for further information and pricing.

      Kind Regards

  • I have a 2006 130i with 80k miles. It lost most of its fluid but I have refilled it and it seems ok at the moment. Is it likely to be a pump or rack issue? Where are you, by the way?
