Alfa Romeo 159 Power Steering Problems – Racks & Pumps

Alfa Romeo 159 Power Steering RepairsThe Alfa Romeo 159 uses a conventional hydraulic power steering system which consists of a Power Steering Rack, Power Steering Pump and high pressure & low pressure hydraulic pipes which connect them together. The system is linked with a Steering column (shaft) which is what the steering wheel is fixed to at the user-end.

Below we’ve listed some common problems with the power steering components on the Alfa 159 and this should hopefully help you better diagnose any faults you’re experiencing and replace the right parts.

Common Alfa Romeo 159 Power Steering Pump Failures

  • Leaking / Loss of Oil
  • Whining
  • Heavy Steering (Either Way)
  • Loss of Power (When Idling)
  • Loss of Power (When Idling & Whilst Revving)

Common Alfa Romeo 159 Power Steering Rack Failures

  • Leaking / Loss of Oil
  • Loss of Power (When Idling & Whilst Revving)
  • Heavy Steering (Either way)
  • Heavy Steering (One-Way)
  • Knocking From Steering
  • Excessive Play in Steering Wheel
  • Excessive Play in Track-Rod Arms

As you can see from the above, some of the problems can occur in both a Power Steering Rack and a Power Steering Pump fault – for example having Loss of Power (When Idling & Whilst Revving) but if you’re unsure as to what may be causing this problem, then give us a call and we would be happy to assist you in diagnosing the problem further.

  • Hi, I have a 2008 Alfa 159 2.4 turbo diesel.
My local garage who look after the car advised me that the power steering pump was noisy. Although to me having the car from new it did not seem to be a problem.
however they replaced the pump with a reconditioned unit. the steering is now very heavy in all conditions , idle, slow, fast etc., The garage now tell me that it is the rams in the rack. What do you think. Could the recon pump be faulty, it’s not a genuine alfa pump. How much do the rams cost to buy?

    • Hi Robin

      Thanks for the enquiry,

The first thing I would recommend is having the non-genuine steering pump tested. We can test this on an isolated testing rig to ensure it is pressuring and holding pressure correctly. We can also test the steering rack at the same time – the ram inside can cause this fault but to say it’s happened directly after fitting an aftermarket steering pump, I would suspect the pump first.

We often have customers come to us saying they replaced the pump and the heavy steering problem remains and after investigating the issue, we find the non-genuine part was not fit for purpose. It’s quite rare that we see an aftermarket steering pump being manufactured to a high standard.

I hope this information helps and should you have any further questions, feel free to come back to us.

      Kind Regards
